Stenwith

Hob Uid: 323744
Location :
Lincolnshire
South Kesteven
Woolsthorpe By Belvoir
Grid Ref : SK8377035740
Summary : Medieval village and moated manor includes earthworks of crofts, a platform, hollow way and ridge and furrow seen as earthworks.
More information : At SK 83633647 is a dry moat set in permanent pasture,
and in good condition. Disturbance on the N.W. of the island
probably indicates the site of the house. To the W. is a hollow
road and enclosures associated with the severely contracted
hamlet of Stenwith.
The close proximity of a centre of habitation suggests the moat
marks the site of the medieval manor house.
See annotated 25" survey. (1)

(SK 836363) Site of DMV of Stenwith or Stainwith, it is mentioned in
Domesday in Barrowby parish. (2)

The Medieval moat described by authority 1 and other settlement
features, which may be part of the deserted village described by
authority 2, were visible as earthworks and mapped from good quality
air photographs. The rectangular moated enclosure, 30m by 40m, is
centred at SK 8361 3646. There was no evidence for a manor house
building within the moated enclosure, visible on air photographs.
To the north of the moat, at SK 8359 3651, are fragmentary broad
ditches which may be part of another substantial ditched enclosure.
A sinuous hollow way lies to the west of the moat extending for
560m from SK 8349 3664 to SK 8348 6313. Flanking the hollow way are
ditched croft enclosures; those to the west at SK 8352 3643 are 30m
by 25m and those to the east at SK 8350 3633 are only fragmentary
ditches. A platform 20m by 10m, is centred at SK 8354 3646, but it is
not certain if this relates to a building. To the SE of the hollow
way and crofts are several blocks of ridge and furrow, on average
200m by 100m, centred at SK 8377 3574. These features probably
form part of the Medieval village settlement recorded from
documentary sources.
