A plaque on the building states "Site of establishment of Friars Observant founded in 1499 by Henry VII. After dissolution .... converted into a private house of which part is incorporated in this building. It was enlarged about 1700...."
The well-restored exterior shows evidence of its multi-period building, with only a little of the 15/16th century work remaining. It is now the offices of the Newark Public Health Dept. GPs. AO/62/36/4 from East. GPs. AO/62/36/5 from West. (2)
The Friary was founded by Henry VII about 1499, but established in 1507, according to Little. On being dissolved in 1534, it was occupied by the Austin Friars until 1539. (3) |
