Monument Number 326101

Hob Uid: 326101
Location :
Lincolnshire
North Kesteven
Navenby
Grid Ref : SK9930057600
Summary : Quantities of Romano-British material have been found on either side of Ermine Street, including building material, coins, pottery, horse fittings, and a brooch. It has been suggested to represent the site of a posting station, mainly on the basis of the site's location. More recently, Scott has included the site in her gazetteer of Roman villas. Other finds include possibly Neolithic worked flints, a decorated hairpin of 9th century date, and post-Roman pottery.
More information : SK 993577. Extensive finds of 3rd/4th century Roman pottery and building material were made on either side of Ermine Street by Mr.J.Presley and pupils of Navenby School. The situation of the settlement suggests a posting station. (1)

The west side of Ermine Street has now been developed as a bungalow estate, but the east remains arable and pottery can still be seen there. Mr. Whitwell said the suggestion of a posting station was based on the location, midway between Lincoln and Ancaster but so far there has been no confirmation of this. Sited to SK 993576. (2)

SK 993575. Four Roman coins were found at Navenby (in the area of the Roman settlement). They were (1) Constantinopolis; (2) Valentinian I; (3) Valens; (4) (? Constantius II) (AD 346-361). (3)

Numerous artefacts found over the years at this site include ?Neolithic worked flints, many Roman coins, horse fittings, fantail brooch, 9th century decorated hairpin and Romano-British to Medieval pottery. Records of finds and donations held on SMR Files, Lincoln City and County Museum. (4-8)

LI 110 Listed as a possible Roman villa. (9)
