Weoley Castle. Footings and foundations of a fortified manor house. Sandstone with 6 towers and a deep moat. These works date from 1264 when Roger de Somery was licensed to crenellate his manor house. A survey of 1422 gives a detailed plan. Fragments of early C13 wooden buildings have been discovered, indicating early use of both horizontal and vertical weatherboarding. (6)

SP 02 82. Noted in list of excavated moats. (7)

Note on the structural aspects of three timber bridges excavated 1938 and 1955-60. A) NE Bridge: deduced from timbers in the moat. Later C12, does not correspond with any later opening. B) East Bridge: remains lie in front of a postern in the middle of the post-1264 curtain, but at right-angles to the edge of the pre-1264 moat. C) NW Bridge: (not shown on published site plan) at the main entrance to the post-1264 enciente and unrelated to earlier moat. (8)

Catalogue and analysis of metal objects found during excavations on the site. (9)

Transcription of a survey undertaken in 1424 of Weoley Castle and Northfield from a book compiled by Richard Jervoise, a London merchant who bought the manor in 1531 from Edward Sutton, Lord Dudley. (10)

Listed by Cathcart King. (11)
