Monument Number 334570

Hob Uid: 334570
Location :
Oxfordshire
West Oxfordshire
North Leigh, Ramsden
Grid Ref : SP3650015400
Summary : Site of a possible Roman villa indicated by pottery, coins, animal and building remains found by farm labourers in fields immediately south of Akeman Street, north west of Wilcote. Some medieval pottery sherds also found.
More information : SP 3638 1551 and SP 3705 1554: Roman Coins found. (TI)(1)

SP 3605 1544: 'A' Roman habitation site.
SP 3643 1542: 'B' and SP 3659 1545: 'C' Roman pottery found. (2)

"Traces of stonework, pottery and coins in quantity have been found by farm labourers in fields immediately south of Akeman Street, north west of Wilcote and immediately east of the wood in which lies Hayes Barn. Other remains:- quantities of potsherds, animal remains and coins of all periods were found north of the Manor. The site on Akeman Street is more probably a village but it may be a house". (3)

At the east end of Ramsden village immediately north of the supposed line of Akeman Street the foundations of a small isolated building, 10 feet 6 inches by 12 feet 10 inches and standing 9 inches to 1 feet 6 inches high, were exposed a few inches below the surface by Mr K E Pembrey of The Grange, Ramsden in September 1938. The walls are about 2.75 feet thick at the base and the floor within is covered with large cobbles. Both Romano-British and medieval pottery occurred in the covering soil mostly close against the outside of the walls and the date of the structure is at present uncertain, though the masonry resembles closely that of the Roman villas at Ditchley and elsewhere in the neighbourhood. The uneveness of the turf in the field suggests that there are other masonry remains near by (See 2A). (4)

SP 3676 1552: Roman Coins found (NAT) (5)

Mr K E Pembrey has left the district and was not contacted. The Grange is now occupied by Lady Cooper-Key; she has no knowledge of the above mentioned sites. The sites fall in pasture fields and no surface indications were seen at 'B' and 'C' but near to site 'A' at SP 3601 1542 is a small area showing parch marks and a stone scatter, possibly the site of the building. (6)

SP 365 154: Probable Romano-British villa or building, listed. (7)

OX 44 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa. (8)
