The Moats

Hob Uid: 336109
Location :
Leicestershire
Hinckley and Bosworth
Stoke Golding
Grid Ref : SP3973096940
Summary : The monument includes the earthwork and buried remains of a medieval farmstead. The farmstead lay within a rectangular enclosure, bounded to the west and along much of its northern and southern sides by banks and ditches. In the south eastern quarter of the site is a slightly raised, square platform, believed to represent the site of the medieval farmhouse. Although the building itself is not visible on the surface its buried remains will provide evidence for the plan of the house. To the west and north west of the platform are several small closes which are defined by low banks and drainage channels, whilst to the south are the remains of a pair of linear ponds, now seasonally waterfilled. Scheduled.
More information : (SP 39739694) The Moats (NR) (1)

"'The Moats'. In a field north-west of the vicarage is an embanked
moat which originally inclosed a square area. The principal
extant portion on the south is 60 ft wide and 10 ft deep. Shallow
ditches branch from it towards the north and west with banks
4 ft in height on the inner side. A spring rises on the
south-west." (2)

These are obviously two old ponds, probably fishponds, with dams
in the south west. They are now dry and grass-covered. A plan of
1801 by Jas Holworthy, in the possession of Mr C R Hall of Park
House Farm, Stoke Golding, shows the features as water-filled and
labels them as Upper Pond and Nether Pond. The features have been
re-surveyed. (See Illust Card) (3)

No change. The ponds are under permanent pasture and the whole
field containing them and the mound SP39NE4 is scheduled. (4)

SP 398 970. The Moats, Stoke Golding. Scheduled. (5)
