Near the Castle in line with the old City Wall, there was

Associated by Wood (a) with fortifications built by King Stephen
1141 in which Jews were compelled to assist. (There were more
than one in his day - 'Jews' Mounts.')

Varying interpretations given by various writers:
'It may have been part of the fortifications reserved for
Jews cf. Winchester'(b) - Alternative name 'Faros (Pharaoh's)
mount is also fd:(c) name Jews Mount not fd. until 16th Cent.
'Near the castle were 'Le Muntes' 1423. Wood mentions 'a little
raised monument called 'Mount Pellam' on the North side of
Oxford castle' & "certain mounts & little hills on the outside
of the said castle ditch." - There is also a 'Jews Mount' here.
