More information : A large possible Second World War bomb crater is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as an earthwork to the north-west of the sound mirrors at Denge (Monument Number 462809). This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project.
The bomb crater is centred at TR 0703 2210, approximately 700m to the north-west of the sound mirror site (Monument Number 462809). The crater measures 19m in diameter and has a small banked rim around the edge. It is thought this may be a result of the loose shingle characteristic of the ground in this area, which would have been upcast by the explosion.
The bomb crater is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946. It is no longer visible, either as an earthwork or a cropmark on vertical aerial photographs of 2007 (1-2). |
