Summary : `Shelswell' DMV, St Ebbe's Church (site of) Fishpond & supp moat
More information : (SP 6103 3094) St Ebbe's Church (NR) (Site of)
(SP 6106 3082 and SP 6114 3094) Moat (NR) (1)

Shelswell (SP611309). Two small fragments of a moat remain
near the Home Farm on the site of the Manor House which from
their direction may also have encompassed St Ebbe's Church
(demolished in the late 18th c). A DMV. Classed as poor, and
probably depopulated by enclosure (3) existed around the church.
Evidence of this is visible on RAF Air photos 1947, as undulations
and marks on the ground. (3-4)

Probably depopulated c 1450- c 1700. Poor quality earthworks
remain (1963). Two 16th c recumbent figures from the church are
reported to be in the grounds of Shelswell mansion (SP 60363068). (5)

There are insufficient extant remains to warrant a former
substantial moat at this site. The published feature at
SP 61073083 has now been partly filled and possibly represents
the remains of a landscaped garden moat but such cannot be
traced on the ground. The feature at SP 61143095 is a fishpond
and contains the remains of a stone sluice. The church foundation
mount is clearly visible together with the former precinct bank
and no graves are evident. Occupation, and later desertion, is
evident adjacent to the church although the whole area has
been badly disturbed by surface quarrying and enclosure banks.
Surveyed at 1:2500.
The recumbents are as noted in authority 5. (6)
