Hob Uid: 343081
Location :
Milton Keynes
Castlethorpe
Grid Ref : SP7980044500
Summary : Motte with two adjoining baileys, plus the earthwork remains of a fishpond complex. The castle earthworks have been damaged in places by village expansion. The earthworks were still visible on aerial photographs in 1974. Scheduled.
More information : (SP 79874451) Castle (NR) (Site of). (1)

Castle Thorpe consists of a mount with two adjoining baileys and the remains of an apparently rectangular enclosure. (2)

The earthworks are as described above. The motte is now much mutilated and stands on the south side of the inner bailey which has two entrances on the W and NW. Also within this bailey stands the church. All the southern earthworks have been destroyed by village growth but some of their remains have been incorporated as garden features.

Remains of a large fishpond complex survive south of the railway. See 25" re-survey and sketch plan of authy 2. (3)

A rapid examination of air photography (4a) shows the earthworks of the motte and bailey and the fishponds. (4)

Listed by Cathcart King. (5)

The castle was in possession of Maudlin (the Chamberlain) in the second half of the 12th century. (6)
