Newton Longeville Priory

Hob Uid: 344851
Location :
Buckinghamshire
Newton Longville
Grid Ref : SP8477031420
Summary : The Cluniac Priory of Newton Longville was founded by Walter Giffard, the endowment of land being granted before his death in 1102, and confirmed by his son circa 1150. The cell was built in Newton soon after the original grant and known as Newton Longville Priory. Knowles and Hadcock say that the cell was apparently non-conventual, several of the monks residing at times at Great Witchingham. St Faith's Church (SP 84773142) incorporates much of the material of a late 12th cent church and may have been the original Priory church. (See also SP83SW8 for the Manor House which RCHM states was on the site of the Priory, although no evidence is cited for that).
