Location :
Buckinghamshire

Grid Ref : SP9860004200
Summary : Remains of a medieval moat, including the foundations of a fortified manor house, curtain wall and gatehouse, probably all of 15th century date. A 15th century barn, altered in the 17th century and now a house, and an 18th century farmhouse and early 18th century barn occupy the site.
More information : (SP 98630424) Moat (NR) (twice). (1)

The barn and moated site at Grove Farm are probably 15th century. The barn was altered in the 17th century and is said to have been originally a chapel. To the E of the barn are the bases of two gatehouses and remains of a curtain wall running N-S (See plan). (2)

Grove Farm marks the site of the old manor house of the Cheynes; the great hall of which was said to have been extant up to 1750. (3)

The rectangular homestead moat has an outer rampart on all sides and measures overall 190.0m E-W by 165.0m N-S. The NW quadrant is isolated by extensions to the moat along the E and W sides with the outer rampart greatly enlarged to the W and N. Much of the W side has been levelled.

Foundations of a gatehouse are set midway in the E side with remains of a curtain wall along the E and S sides. Within this
strongly defended quarter, Mr Harman encountered extensive foundations during digging, which are undoubtably those of the fortified manor-house. The sole remaining part is the present
dwelling house at SP 9860 0428 formerly used as a barn and erroneously referred to as a chapel. The ground floor has probably 15th century windows and doorways and the upper floor 17th century half-timbering.

The moat is waterfilled around the NW quadrant but elsewhere it is dry or marshy although generally in good condition. A broad
causewayed entrance in the N side is probably original; all other ways in are obviously modern.

Grove Farmhouse and outbuildings in the S half of the site are 19th century.

Published 1:2500 survey revised. (4)
