Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 34684

Hob Uid: 34684
Location :
North Devon
Grid Ref : SS6613042270
Summary : A Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a turf-covered mound in a field to the north-west of Brockenbarrow Farm, Challacombe. The monument measures 12.4 metres in diameter and 0.6 metres high. It has been badly damaged by cattle trampling. A hollow in the centre of the mound could indicate a past excavation.
More information : TUMULUS (1)

Authority was probably R.Hansford Worth. (2)

Tumulus located and surveyed on field document at SS66134227. It is well defined, about two feet high at the centre, and approx. thirty seven feet in diam. It has a slight hollow in the centre. (3)

[SS 66134228] Tumulus [NR] (4)

(SS66144228) Round barrow, 12 paces x 2 ft, under grass with a hollow centre; to the E, a slight extension of uncertain origin.

SS66134227. Round Barrow 14.0m dia, and 0.5m high in grazing land. Surveyed at 1:2500. (5)

Centred at SS 66134227. A turf-covered mound measuring 12.4m north-south by 10.6m and standing to 0.6m in height. The barrow lies on poorly drained ground, and has been badley damaged by cattle trampling which has puddled the eastern side of the barrow in particular. The mound is therefore not that well defined.
Vegetation: Reeds and tussocky grass
Aspect: Lies on the crest of the west side of a shallow north-south valley, and close to its head. Good views to south-east formerly considered the vestige of a stone row, (SS 64 SE 6) has recently been described as almost certainly a natural feature. It appears to be one of a number of naturally occurring surface stones in the area. (6)

The barrow described by the authorities above is clearly visible on aerial photographs as a low mound at SS 6613 4227. No trace of the excavation hollow described by authority 3 and 5 can be seen. A second mound approximately 100 metres to the north has been recorded separately (7)
