Summary : Medieval pottery kiln discovered during construction work at Stamford School in 1963. The kiln was found 100 metres east of the kiln found in 1874. It was a Musty type 1 b, and was single flued updraught kiln, oval in plan. It measured 3.65 metres in length and 2.29 metres in width. The kiln walls were clay lined. There was a central pedestal and traces of three more within the interior, these supported a raised floor comprising clay firebars. The pottery was of Stamford ware, fabric B, a fine sandy fabric, often glazed. The pottery was wheel-thrown and included a range of bowls, jugs and pitchers. The kiln was in production during the 13th century, this is based on the ceramic evidence. Archaeomagnetic dating gives a date range for the kiln of circa 1200+/-20. |
