Bowthorpe

Hob Uid: 348176
Location :
Lincolnshire
South Kesteven
Toft with Lound and Manthorpe
Grid Ref : TF0686015270
Summary : Possible Deserted Medieval settlement, buildings and field boundaries seen as earthworks. One building appears to be post-Medieval in date.
More information : The lost village of Bowthorpe, which was mentioned at the time of the Domesday Survey, is represented by the 17th century Bowthorpe Park Farm, TF 067154, south-west of Manthorpe.

Burthorpe is mentioned in the 13th century, Manthorpe and Bourthorpe in the 14th century, and Burthorpe and Manthorpe in 1585.

Air photographs show amorphous marks only. (1-4)

There are no surface indications of desertion in the indicated
area.

Air photograph markings have now been ploughed, during which the
farmer met no obstacles.
Amorphous earthworks - probably quarrying - are at TF 06851545. (5)

No change since 18.6.65. (6)

(c.TF 060 150) Adewelle is mentioned with Bowthorpe in Domesday. (7)

Examination of the photography referenced by Authorities 1-4
identified only the slightest evidence of possible Medieval
settlement which was mapped from poor quality air photographs.
The following features were identified:-

The earthwork remains of two possible rectangular buildings at
TF 0685 1535 and TF 0685 1532, and a rectangular depression.
These features were adjacent to possible field boundaries,
perpendicular linear features, each defined by 1 ditch and 1 bank
with a maximum length of 80m.
Centred at:-TF 0686 1527

To the west, another rectangular enclosure 15m by 8m may be another
building, possibly of a later (Post Medieval) date; it is outlined
on the south by the arc of a ditch.
Centred at:-TF 0679 1538
(Morph No. LI.766.31.1-6)

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database.
