More information : [Area TF 100 459]. Traces of earthworks visible on air photograph [AO/LP/63/293], indicate a deserted village site. Foster lists Thorpe or Laythorpe, and Burgh or Burg, "a village associated with Evedon and perhaps also with Kirkby Laythorpe," both mentioned in 1086. [See TF 04 N.E.15 and TF 04 N.R.17 for two further sites in area.] (1)(2) The area shows no evidence of extensive desertion but there are indications of shrinkage. The early fields visible on air photographs have been ploughed. (3)
No change. (4)
Listed by Beresford at NGR c.TF 106 465 (see also TF 04 NE 15 and TF 04 NE 17). (5)
The Medieval settlement referred to by the previous authorities was seen as earthworks, around Kirby La Thorpe village, and mapped from poor quality air photographs. The fragmentary remains of crofts are visible to the west and east of Church Lane centred at TF 0985 4602 and TF 1003 4590. One block of ridge and furrow survives as earthworks from the field system that once surrounded the Medieval settlement. This is centred at TF 0966 4592. (Morph No. LI.852.3.1-3)
