Anglian urn cemetery discovered in 1851, and partially excavated
by the Rev. Edward Trollope about 1863, in the close called
"Tinker's Urn", Baston.

Trollope found ten urns, full of calcined bones, at a depth of
about 1 ft. They were of ill-baked, dark grey ware, varying from
5 in. to 11 1/2 in. in diameter, some ornamented with raised
knobs, and one with concentric circles. Two pairs of iron shears
and a fragment of a bone comb were found in the urns.

On a previous occasion, a bronze fibula was found in an urn
on the same spot.

The two urns illustrated are dated by Myres to c. AD.500 and
AD 550-600. [See Illustrations Card] (2)(3)

No further information. The indicated site is under pasture. (4)

Rescue excavations on the site of the small Anglian cemetery
were directed by Mr.P.Mayes for the M.P.B.W. when old
grassland at Urns Farm was cultivated. (5)

TF 110137. Sherds of 16 cremation urns were found following ploughing in February 1965. One urn yielded an almost complete triangular bone comb, two iron knives and bronze tweezers (1). TF 107136 Saxo-Norman pottery from same area (2). (6)(7)
