Hob Uid: 351220
Location :
Lincolnshire
North Kesteven
Walcott
Grid Ref : TF1289056440
Summary : Site of a Medieval chapel given by King John to Spalding Abbey, pulled down in 1790. It stood circa 200 yards West of the present Methodist Church.
More information : [Area TF 1288 5469] A chapel at Walcot, dedicated to
St. Oswald, and given by King John to Spalding Abbey, formerly
stood in the centre of the village about 200 yards west of the
Methodist chapel. It was pulled down c. 1790 and the site is now
[1825] occupied by the garden of Mrs. Holmes. (1-2)

Mrs. Coulin (aged 82) of Metheringham Road, Walcot, stated that
her grandfather (born 1823 died 1920) used to say that "the old
chapel stood in the garden opposite the school", and indicated
a site at TF 1289 5644 (now a stockyard - no building remains
visible).
Mrs. Coulin also said that the old font stood "for many years"
at the corner of the school yard, but was destroyed by passing
traffic "long before the war" (1939-45).
Mr. W. Skinns, Churchwarden, Walcot Ch., confirmed that Mrs.
Coulin's siting had always been accepted by the villagers as
correct. He recalled the font (in position as stated) and its
destruction. (3)
