More information : SS 799484. Two standing stones located east of Oare Post (SS 83674643). (1) SS 79874837 & SS 79874836 Two upright standing stones 0.8m high and 19.0m apart. The northernmost has a small packing stone. Surveyed at 1:2500 on PFD. (2) (SS 79864837 & SS 79874836) Standing Stones (NR). (3)
SS 79874837 two standing stones on Yenworthy Common at about 355m OD. They are situated on a gentle S facing slope, under heather and gorse cover, at the NW end of a ridge. Sited just to the S of the ridge summit they can be seen from the valley of the East Lyn river to the W; howeverthe view to the N is hidden by the summit. Both are of local sandstone and are aligned NNW-SSE.
(A) SS 79874838. The northernmost is a chisel topped earthfast slab of wedge shape section 0.9m high, 0.75m wide E-w and 0.15m to 0.3m thick. There is a small packing stone embedded in the turf to the S of its base and a shallow erosion hollow 0.3m deep and about 1.8m diameter on the S side.
(B) SS 79884836. Some 19m SSE is a pointed top earthfast block 0.95m high, 0.5m wide E-W and 0.25m thick has a slight lean to the N. No packing stones are visible but there is an oval erosion hollow o.4m maximum depth and 2m E-W diameter. Around the W, S to SE side is an outer facing scarp a maximum 0.6m high which may be part of the original feature. (NB although Grinsells (1) NGR is correct his location `E of Oare Post' is erroneous.) (4).
A cairn referred to in the Somerset SMR record, although not given a location by its finder, may be the cairn-like feature recorded by source 4 around the southern side of the southern stone. A circular platform also noted in the SMR could not be located, nor could an additional two standing stones referred to by the same source. (5) |
