Manwar Ings

Hob Uid: 352577
Location :
Lincolnshire
Boston
Swineshead
Grid Ref : TF2433040970
Summary : A medieval motte with two concentric moats which is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century by the de Gresley family, lords of the manor of Swineshead. The remains of the castle take the form of a series of substantial earthworks, including a circular motte and concentric inner and outer moats, now dry. The motte is represented by a raised circular platform, now largely level, standing to a height of nearly 2 metres above the surrounding fields. The motte is surrounded by a deep inner moat about 15 metres wide, in turn encircled by a space which varies between 7 metres and 15 metres in width. Surrounding that is an outer moat 7-10 metres in width, originally circular in plan but partly truncated on the eastern side by modern ploughing. Scheduled.
More information : [TF 2433 4097] Motte and Bailey [G.T.]. (1)

Manwar Ings (Manor Inges), double-ditched, flat-topped mound and moated bailey. Stones, no doubt of buildings have been taken from the mound and there are traces of what look like foundations to the south-east of the bailey. Scheduled AO/LP/63/297 (5). A scatter of chiefly 14th-16th century pottery found on and around the site is in Boston Museum. (2-6)

A double ditched ring castle. There is no surface evidence of either a bailey or a building within the ring.
Published survey (25") revised. (7)
