More information : [TF 22787915] Ranby Hoe TUMULUS[OE] (Site of). (1) A large tumulus removed in the 19th century. Beacon Hill is marked a little to the west on the O.S. map of 1924 at approximately TF 22727914. Nothing remains. (2) The field concerned is now under crop; there are no traces of either the mound or beacon. The highest point in the immediate vicinity is at TF 22517924, where there is no feature of note. (3)
The tumulus referred to by the previous authorities was seen as a cropmark and mapped from good quality air photographs. It is visible as a ploughed mound surrounded by a circular ditch with diameter 25m and is centred at TF 2272 7915. The outer ditch perhaps suggests the interpretation of Bronze Age round barrow is more likely but there is no evidence to suggest it is not a Post Medieval beacon. It could have served both functions. (Morph No. LI.568.7.1-2)
