More information : Thirling in Upwell belonged to Ixworth Priory but it does not seem to have been a regular Augustinian cell and is omitted in the VCH of Cambs. Its foundation date is unknown but it was dissolved in 1519. In the 16th century the drain (Old Croft River) from Upwell to Welney was to be cleansed by the Prior of Marmont (TF 4930013) and the canon of Thirling. (1)

Ixworth Priory was generally known as Thurling, it can be identified with Thurland Drove on the west boundary of Upwell near Laddus Bank. Thurling itself seems merely to have been a farmhouse or grange of Ixworth Priory. (3)
Thurland's Drove falls in TF 4802 and is occupied by modern dwellings. No other local information was gained in research at Wisbech Reference Library concerning this cell or grange. (4) |
