Summary : Mainly 14th century with 15th and early 16th century additions. Bedingfeld chantry chapel founded in 1496. Flint with ashlar and some brick dressings. Ashlar facing to chantry chapel. Lead roofs. North aisle with porch; base of north wall of west tower;chancel with north vestry and chantry chapel to south; part of south aisle wall. The rest collapsed in 1948 following the collapse of the steeple. |
More information : (TF 7430 0142) ST JOHN'S CHURCH (NAT) (Ruins) (NAT) (1) Mainly 14th cent with 15th and early 16th cent. additions. In 1948 the steeple fell (which was one of the tallest in Norfolk - 150 ft high), destroying part of the church. The chancel and the Bedingfield Chapel (south of it) were unscathed. (2-4) The chancel and Bedingfield chapel are still open for divine worship. No attempt has yet been made to restore the main body of the church which is preserved in its collapsed condition.
