Hyde Vale Conduit Head

Summary : Conduit head constructed about 1710 situated at the corner of West Grove and Hyde Vale in Greenwich Park. It is hemispherical in plan, measuring 2.4 metres long and 4.2 metres high. It originally gave access to the Hyde Vale conduit.

Recorded during the RCHME Greenwich Park Survey, Sep-1993 to Feb 1994.

A brick structure, situated at the corner of West Grove and Hyde Vale. Identified as No. 2 [Conduit Head] by a circular stone plaque on the north wall.

The building is hemispherical in plan, measuring 2.4m on a side and roughly 4.2m high. The walls and roof are of brick construction, the walls in Flemish Bond, the corbelled vault composed largely of headers.

A stone plaque on the east side carries the fading legend;

THIS CONDUIT HEAD
part of the water supply of the ROYAL HOSPITAL
for seamen at GREENWICH
was built about 1710

The Conduit head originally gave access to the Hyde Vale conduit (see TQ 37 NE 89).
