More information : (TF 70091215) Remains of (NAT) Priory of Holy Trinity St Mary & St Magdalene (NT) (Augustinian) (1) Pentney priory founded c.1130 for Augustinian canons, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, St Mary and St Magdalene; dissolved 1537. (2) Consolidated with Wormegay priory 1468. The remains consist of little more than foundations, apart from a fine late 14th.c. gatehouse. (3) The Priory gatehouse 14th.c. Grade 1, including Abbey Farm and outbuildings 17th.c. incorporating reused material from Priory. (4) The Priory gatehouse is in good condition though unroofed. See photographs. The adjacent farm buildings contain much re-used material and an original doorway from the Priory is incorporated into the west wall of the modern farmhouse. No further foundations were seen in the adjacent fields which are under plough, and none are visible on OS air photographs. Cropmarks centred TF 700 120 may represent ditches associated with the site. Published 25" survey revised on AM. (5)
TF 7080 1216. At the priory trenching revealed pits apparently for burning stonework for lime production at the time of the Dissolution. Collection of medieval items included fragments of stained glass and monomental brasses from the area. (6)
