Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 35789

Hob Uid: 35789
Location :
Somerset
Somerset West and Taunton
Winsford
Grid Ref : SS8800033900
Summary : A series of Medieval and/or post medieval earthworks run across Winsford Hill, predominately southeast-northwest. These represent the remains of trackways, probably connecting Dulverton and Exford. They also seem to define part of an extensive field system (described in SS 83 SE 57) on Winsford Hill.
More information : A track supplementing the Roman road system and in use in the
post-Roman period ran over Winsford Hill, perhaps connecting the Exe
valley with the North Devon coast. (Presumably the track running
NW-SE over Winsford Hill between, say SS 870344 and SS890333; and
presumably identified as in post-Roman use because of the 6th century
'Caratacus Stone', SS 83 SE 6, alongside it). (1)

A series of well defined earthworks run across Winsford Hill, predominately southeast-northwest. These represent the remains of trackways, probably connecting Dulverton and Exford. They may date from the medieval or post medieval period. Their relationship with the extensive post medieval field on Winsford Hill will be elucidated following the completion of an AP transcription as part of the RCHME East Exmoor Project (2).

It is not immediately obvious, from the aerial survey described by authority 2, what the relationship between the trackways and the Medieval/Post Medieval field systems (described in SS 83 NE 49) on Winsford Hill. The example given by authority 1 between SS 870 344 and SS 890 333, seems to form part of the field system itself. (3)
