East Barsham Manor House is the picture-book ideal of an Early
Tudor house. It was built by Sir Henry Fermor about 1520-30 and
the gatehouse about 1527. The house was conscientiously
restored in 1919 and 1938. The east part is original including
the porch, but of the west part only the facade and the
chimneys are as they were built. Some authorities favour an
earlier date than that given by Pevsner. Rye (3) says it was
probably built by Roger Wode c.1508, while Britton (4) remarks
that from the style of the arches, ornaments and armorial
bearings the greater part of the house may be attributed to the
reign of Henry VII (died 1508). The gatehouse, however, must be
given to the time of Henry VIII. The house was once known as
Wolterton Manor (3). (2-4)

Well textured and magnificent example of Early Tudor brickwork.
Grade I. Gatehouse scheduled. (5)

Outstanding. See photograph. (6)
