Barnwell Castle, a fortified dwelling, was built about 1266. It was oblong in shape with round corner towers and protected gateway. Nothing remains within the walls as the buildings were demolished in Elizabethan times. (2)

Barnwell Castle. C.1266, built of limestone from local quarry. A rectangle of walls about 12' 0" thick and 20' to 25' high with round towers at corners, varying in plan, and arched entrance on SE corner flanked by semi-circular towers. Built by Bevenger le Moyne, afterwards in the possession of the Abbots of Ramsey, and bought by Sir Edward Montagu in c.1540. (5)
In 1980 an excavation was carried out on the North East and North West towers in order to recover masonry for reconstruction work. [The GRN quoted in this reference is incorrect]. (6)
