Castle Barn

Summary : Castle crenellated in 1301 by Walter de Langton, Bishop of Lichfield. The existing building, early 14th century and now used as a barn, was the great hall of the castle and originally two storeys. The upper room floor has gone but the open roof displays magnificent timber work of tie-bean construction. The building has a stone exterior.

I Castle Barn

About 1300, Walter de Langton, Bishop of Lichfield had licence to
crenelate the castle in 1301.
The existing building, now used as a barn, was the great hall of
the castle, originally of two storeys. A rectangular plan, of stone,
the gable ends have stone copings and small block finials at apex
and foot of gables, thatched roof.
The north gable has projecting central chimney starting at 1st floor
level and having octagonal crenelated shaft on square base. At attic
level the chimney is flanked by deeply recessed moulded bull's eye
windows. Internally the floor of the upper room has gone. The open
roof of magnificent timber work is of tie-beam construction,
supporting king posts and collar beams, the tie-beams have wall posts
and curved bracers, the king posts have bracers both across and
along the roof, and similar bracers opposite the collars. The main
beams have moulded soffits. The west wall has had two modern barn
entrances out in it.
