More information : TL 144012: A Roman building was discovered in 1940 W of Netherwylde Farm, Colney Street, on rising ground immediately S of the R.Colne and 400 yards E of its confluence with the R.Ver. Partly excavated 1941 by Dr Norman Davey who found inter alia an updraught kiln and a hypocaust. Since 1960 the site has been systematically excavated by the Watford and S.W Herts Archaeol Soc under the direction of B Rawlins. A bath building a barn, a tile-kiln and a corridor connecting the bath building to the villa have all been excavated, but the villa proper has yet to be discovered. Finds (stored at Verulamium Museum) date the complex to the C2nd-4th. (1-5)
Most of the area of this complex is arable and shows a slight scatter of building material. Concentrations occur at TL 14160101 - 'B', and 14350110- 'C'; and at TL 14170112- 'D' a very heavy concentration of briquetage, brick and tile indicates the site of the kiln. Mr Hedges the farmer indicated the site of the bathhouse and the barn to Mr Aldsworth in 1966 (bathhouse TL 14380123-'A'; barn TL 14220086-'E'). Nothing was visible then and or now. (6)
