Summary : Bampton Castle consists of a motte with possibly part of the bailey surviving to the south east. A castle here was captured by King Stephen in 1136 and another licenced in 1336.
More information : [Centered SS 9590 2253] Bampton Castle (site of) The Mount (site of) Keep. (1) A castle was erected on this site in 1336. The mount, with an escarpment of 40ft., is in the south-west of a rectangular base-court 500ft by 400 ft. The combination of natural and artificial defences were of great strength (See plan). (2) Bampton Castle consists of a motte with a part of the bailey surviving in the S.E. The field to the north is a partly levelled recreation ground. No trace of the bailey can be seen across it. Published survey (1/2500) revised. (3) SS 959225. The Mote, motte and bailey castle. (4) Listed by Cathcart King. A castle here was captured by King Stephen in 1136 and a castle was licenced here in 1336. (5)
