A castle was erected on this site in 1336. The mount, with an escarpment of 40ft., is in the south-west of a rectangular base-court 500ft by 400 ft. The combination of natural and artificial defences were of great strength (See plan). (2)
Bampton Castle consists of a motte with a part of the bailey surviving in the S.E. The field to the north is a partly levelled recreation ground. No trace of the bailey can be seen across it.
