Dovecote

Hob Uid: 36954
Location :
Somerset
Somerset West and Taunton
Dunster
Grid Ref : SS9901743725
Summary : A Post Medieval dovecote situated 60 metres north of St George's Church in the western half of the village of Dunster. The dovecote was originally associated with the medieval Dunster Priory and is considered to date from the 16th century, its purpose was to provide the priory with fresh meat from squabs (young birds) and adult pigeons. Restoration work was undertaken on the roof and walls in 1989. The dovecote is circular and rubble-built with a conical slate roof surmounted at its apex by a wooden exit turret also roofed in slate. There is a single narrow wooden-framed doorway on the eastern side which is reached by two steps. The internal walls of the dovecote are lined with over 500 'L'-shaped nest holes. At the centre is a potence or revolving ladder giving access to the boxes which has been dated to the 19th century. This is a listed Grade II building and Scheduled Monument .

A little to the west of Dunster Priory is the 13th century prior's
dovecote. The doors and jambs are of great antiquity and within may
be seen the revolving ladder by means of which the young pigeons were
removed from the nest. (2)
