More information : At SS 9667 4733 on steep north-east facing slopes in Culver Cliff Wood is a rectangular platform. It measures approximately 21 m by 18 m and is terraced into the hillside on its upper (south-western) side by 2.2 m. The platform is on a split level, with a very steep cross scarp 1.4 m high dividing it into a north-eastern and south-western half. Three mounds of material, 0.6 m high, are visible on this north-eastern half. Access to the platform appears to have been from the north-west, where a terraced track connects it with the main path through the wood. The function and date of this platform are uncertain, but its proximity to the building some 140 m to the north-west (SS 94 NE 48) may suggest that the two are associated. The platform is clearly depicted on the OS 1st edition 25" mapping of 1889 (1). Found during RCHME fieldwork on the Exmoor National Park holding on North Hill and surveyed at 1:2500 scale. (2), (3)
