Stapleford Causewayed Enclosure

Hob Uid: 371685
Location :
Cambridgeshire
South Cambridgeshire
Stapleford
Grid Ref : TL4893053060
Summary : A possible Neolithic causewayed enclosure is visible on air photographs as a soilmark in the vicinity of Little Trees Hill, Stapleford. The features were transcribed and interpreted by RCHME in 1997 as part of the Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic Project. See the archive report for full details. The enclosure appears to have encircled the small knoll of Little Trees Hill, which forms the south-western edge of a slight ridge. The visible features comprise an arc of five short ditch segments plus a sixth positioned at right angles to the remainder. A second ditch lies 5 metres inside the first. It is much narrower and, unlike the outer arc, is of uniform width throughout. It too is periodically interrupted by gaps or causeways in its circuit. On either side of this inner ditch is a wide light-coloured soilmark which has been interpreted as the remains of two banks. Two gaps are visible in the banks, both of which coincide with breaks in the ditches. One is flanked by above-mentioned ditch length positioned at right angles to the outer circuit.
More information : TL 488530 Crop mark of a single, curving ditch
around the base of Little Trees Hill on the north side, visible
on St Joseph air photograph. The ditch is interrupted by
"entrances" in at least two places.

Nothing visible on the ground.

The features described by the previous authorities were seen on air photographs and mapped at 1:2500 scale by the Aerial Survey section of RCHME in February 1997. The feature forms the northern half of a large curvilinear enclosure which when complete, would have encircled the base of Little Trees Hill and enclosed an area of approximately 3.85 hectares. The enclosure comprises two interrupted ditches and a wide bank or banks. Its morphology indicates that it may be part of a causewayed enclosure of Neolithic date. Worked flints have been found in the immediate vicinity of the enclosure, perhaps confirming this interpretation, (see record TL 45 SE 38).
