Wigmore Pond

Hob Uid: 377054
Location :
Cambridgeshire
South Cambridgeshire
Castle Camps
Grid Ref : TL6260041600
Summary : Possible Medieval defensive earthworks, suggested to be associated with nearby castle.
More information : (TL 626416) Wigmore Pond (NR) (1)

This pond is enclosed on the north and south sides by broad and
deep artifical banks. (2)

There is no water in the pond. The whole is so heavily wooded
that it is practically impossible to recognise. (3)

Wigmore Pond (name confirmed) has been filled and now only
survives as two parallel banks lying northeast-southwest and
averaging 9.0m wide and 2.0m high. The northwest one is 60.0m
long and the other 54.0m long; both are covered with trees and
scrub. The central area is under plough but stands 0.8m above
ground level.

No evidence of early occupation was seen in the vicinity, only
debris from the adjacent airfield.

The feature is situated on a high north-south ridge with panoramic views and seems an unlikely site for a pond. It could
have been a defensive earthwork perhaps connected in some way
with the castle (TL 64 SW 7). The feature does not appear on
the Tithe Map (a) but the field is named 'Wigmore Field'.

Published 25" survey revised. (4)
