Monument Number 377420

Hob Uid: 377420
Location :
West Suffolk
Grid Ref : TL6900064000
Summary : Circular mound (landscaping or gazebo)
More information : A circular mound, about 15ft high, in the grounds of
Mr Staples' house at Moulton (TL 6964) was excavated in 1850.
Nothing indicative of a sepulchral origin was found and it may
have been the site of a small watch tower as evidence of a
stone wall was found in the trench around the mound. (1)

TL 69696397. A circular mound situated in the grounds of
Moulton Manor (present house early modern) on the lower slopes
of a north-east facing valley scarp circa 45.0m. O.D.

The situation was formerly a field owned by W. Staples called
the 'Grove' and a circular pond existed to the immediate south

The feature measures overall 16.0m. in diameter and 2.6m. high
with no trace of a ditch. Its position is not typical of a
barrow and it is also topographically unsuitable for a
watchtower as previously suggested.

According to the present owner, the former manor house stood
nearer the road on the lower north-east side of the mound, and
it is probable that this is either a landscaping feature or a
gazebo mound, which would account, in part, for the stone wall
found. The former field name also suggests a retreat.

Revised at 1:2500. (2)
