Summary : Roman cremation burials were unearthed during construction of a road in 1864.

A "quantity" of Roman urns, full of bones and ashes, were
discovered by workmen constructing a road about 1 mile from
Clare in 1864. They were discovered at a depth of circa 1
1/2ft, and seven or eight of the urns were found within the
space of a few yards. Near where they were discovered is a plot
of land called the 'Dane pits'. (2)
