More information : (TL75875244) Denston Hall (NAT) Chantry (NR) (Remains of) Moat (NR) (1) The present Denston Hall is an early 18th century two storey red brick building with attics. Grade 2*. Behind the house is a long range of Tudor brick with a number of brick windows with hood-moulds, this being part of a large house of early 16th century date, the gatehouse of which is known from old illustrations. The back of the range overlooks the moat. ' A room with a ceiling with moulded beams and much C15-16 woodwork does not belong to the original house'. (2-3) An ancient building adjoining the west side of Denston Hall is supposed to be the remains of the chantry founded here in the reign of Edward VI (see TL 75 SE 2). Denston Hall (name confirmed) the new and the old halls being as described. The moat survives as a dry ditch 14.0m wide and 3.0m deep, and according to the owner, in dry weather vague traces can also be recognised to the south and east of the new hall. The Fish Ponds to the south of the hall are of uncertain date, but are possibly an ornamental feature contemporary with the present hall. Published 1:2500 survey correct. (4)
