Summary : Site of Carmelite friary founded in 1293 in the parish of All Saints in Maldon. The founders were Richard Gravesend, Bishop of London, and Richard Isleham, rector of South Hanningfield. Dissolved in 1538. Excavations in 1990-1 revealed the severely robbed north and west sides of the cloister. It is thought that the church occupied the north side of the cloister, and if so, would have been a simple nave and chancel plan. However, unusually, no burials were found in the area of the church, so it is possible that this building was not the church. The building to the south on the west side of the cloister is interpreted as the chapter house. A building circa 50m south-west of the complex is interpreted as a barn or stable. |
