Hob Uid: 390909
Location :
Suffolk
Mid Suffolk
Mendham
Grid Ref : TM2613081860
Summary : Cluniac cell of Casle Acre founded before 1155. Between 1351-74 it became denizen and was dissolved in 1536. There are no remains, but some of the stonework in Mendham Priory House was reused from the priory. Cropmarks of the site show the plan of the church and claustral buildings well.
More information : (TM 2613 8186) Remains of St Mary's Priory (NR) (cluniac). (1)

St Mary's Priory, Mendham. A cluniac cell founded before 1155 for a prior and two monks by William de Huntingfield. At the suppression in 1351-74, there were eleven monks. (2)

The ruins of the Priory Have now disappeared. A good deal of the moulded stonework is built into the walls etc, at Mendham Priory house. (3)

All that remains of the priory is a small isolated fragment of masonary at TM 2613 8186. See GP. As mentioned by Auth 3 much of the stonework from the priory has been reused at Mendham Priory and Priory Farm. See GPs. (4)

During dry conditions in 1978 the remarkable clear cropmarks of much of the plan of the Priory were photographed and plotted. To the north-east of the priory is a substantial rectangular enclosure. (5)
