Shelton Hall

Hob Uid: 391144
Location :
Norfolk
South Norfolk
Shelton and Hardwick
Grid Ref : TM2276090450
Summary : Hall on site of 15th century moated hall.
More information : (TM 22769042) Shelton Hall (NAT) on site of Shelton
Hall (NR) Moat (NR) (1)

Present hall, Gd II, 17th Cent and later with 16th Cent
outbuilding.(2) Stands on NE side of the ruined 15th Cent hall
built by Sir Ralph Shelton (d 1497) (3). (2-3)

Sir Ralph Shelton moved into his new hall from an earlier house,
the site of which is now marked by moats in a nearby pasture.
(TM 29 SW 9). This new hall was moated and semi-fortified.
A picture hanging in the present hall depicts a strong courtyard
brick building similar to Oxborough Hall (TF 7401), and filling
the entire island. This has now completely gone leaving a
brick revetment on the inner scarp of the moat.

Published 25" survey revised.

The outbuilding, a barn now used partly as a garage, stands
at TM 22829046. See GP. (4)
