More information : (TM 312599) Moat Hall formerly Parham Hall (NR) (1)

Parham Hall, a moated brick and timber mansion, built between 1498-1527. It is said to stand within the precincts of a former 13th cent fortified house. In 1900 the building was in poor condition and an outer moat was visible 200 yds from the present moat. (2-3)

#2000 spent on restoration. Moat in good condition. (4)

Moat Hall Farm formerly Parham Hall, is an outstanding private residence in excellent and original condition. It is situated in the NW corner of a rectangular moated area, 104.0 m N-S by 70.0 m E-W, which is entered by a causeway across the E arm of the moat, and through a brick-built Tudor arch. Some of the outbuildings are contemporary with the house, and one
incorporates stone mouldings which may have come from the supposed 13th c fortified house, though the existence of the latter cannot be verified.

The moat is waterfilled, with an internal revetment, and varies from 47.0 m to 12.0 m in width. Contiguous to the W arm is an enclosure, now under pasture, bounded on the S, W and part of the N side by a broad ditch and low inner bank. The ditch must always have been dry due to sloping ground. The enclosure may be contemporary with the house, possibly for stock.

In Stewpond Wood, to the N of the moat at a higher level, are a number of fishponds of which only one is waterfilled. Originally water from the ponds fed the moat.

Published survey (25") of moat revised and fishponds
surveyed at 1:2500. (5)

Moat Hall. Listed Grade II*. (6)
