More information : (SE 12317130) Bouthwaite Grange (NAT) (1)
Bouthwaite Grange, Fountains Earth, is a late 16th or early 17th century stone building, possibly incorporating earlier work, with the date 1673 over a front doorway. One window contains fragments of Medieval coloured glass. Grade 2*. Mentioned in 1198, Bouthwaite was originally a grange of Fountains Abbey and some traces of foundations, including the remains of at least one large building, are in the meadow immediately to the north west of the farm house. Bouthwaite Grange, name confirmed, is much modernised but in good condition, see illustration. All trace of the grange foundations has been obliterated by new farm buildings at SE 12317132. (4) |
