Location :

Watchet
Grid Ref : ST0700043000
Summary : Saxon mint at Watchet striking coins from 979-1055. It was the only Wessex mint not to mint coins from 1056-1066, the reason probably being that it was threatened by coastal erosion and that it transferred to a new site.
More information : ST0743. Saxon mint at Watchet sited to the burh at Dawes Castle.

The earliest coins were struck at Watchet in 979 and continued to be struck into the reign of Harthacnut. The mint struck intermittently in Edward the Confessor's reign, and ceased in 1056. The mint reopened again in 1080. This hiatus is unique among the Wessex mints and may be explained by coastal erosion threatening the burh. It is believed that the mint was transferred to a new site on the opposite side of the R. Wachford in modern Watchet. (1-3)
