Summary : Numerous Second World War weapons pits are visible as earthworks on air photographs. The pits are located to the north of the decoy site on Sneaton Moor (UID 1345990) and span a distance of some 2.5 km, in clusters of 2-3 pits. The pits may have served a defensive and/or training purpose; the decoy site is recorded as having been used for D-day training following decommission in 1944. The latest evidence for the weapons pits could not be ascertained owing to vegetation cover on vertical photography taken in 2009.
More information : Numerous Second World War weapons pits are visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at NZ 9053 0391. The pits are located to the north of the decoy site on Sneaton Moor (UID 1345990) and span a distance of some 2.5 km, in clusters of 2-3 pits. The pits may have served a defensive and/or training purpose; the decoy site is recorded as having been used for D-day training following decommission in 1944. The latest evidence for the weapons pits could not be ascertained owing to vegetation cover on vertical photography taken in 2009.
