More information : [TQ 29616530] Beddington Park House (Female Orphan Asylum) [T.I.] Royal Female Orphanage [T.I.] (1-2) Beddington Place - Great Hall only. A grade I building, it incorporates a remarkably fine Great Hall c.1550. (3) An early 18thC. Octagonal Dovecot [at TQ 29546537] is scheduled. (4) Beddington Place was built in the mid. 14thc. rebuilt c1530-40 and again c.1709-10. It became an orphanage in 1859, and in 1865 a fire destroyed the north range which was replaced by two projecting wings. (5)

Beddington Park House was the former manor house of the Carew family. The Manor (and Carew estate), once a medieval moated house, was sold in 1859 and home to the Royal Female Orphanage (founded 1758) from 1866 until 1968. It now contains council offices and Carew Manor School (special school). (7)

Beddington Park is a site of considerable archaeological importance and contains earthworks which are probably of medieval and later dates.
