More information : SD 44320851. This small earthwork, discovererd during field investigation, is situated at the foot of a very gentle SW slope with a stream to the immediate SW. It is 125 feet above sea level. Semi-circular in shape it consists of a ditch with outer bank. The profile is fairly sharp and not indicative of great age. There are no traces of entrances other than the gaps between the ends of the ditch and the nearby stream. No internal features are visible. The form it takes of trench and parapet, is apparently of a fairly modern military work. It is known locally as the 'Gun Pit' and traditionally associated with a Civil War siege of the moated site approximately 350.0m to the NNW (See SD 40 NW 3). The form of the earthwork, its orientation and tactical siting all tend to support this possibility. The nearby LATHOM HALL (SD 40 NE2) was also the scene of a Civil War siege.
