Summary : Blockhouse built in 1559 and partly damaged by sea erosion 1748 and was in ruins by 1773.
More information : The Block House, the town's chief defence and a store-house for arms, was built in 1559, on the cliff near the S end of Middle Street. The undercliff was eventually washed away, the sea undermined the foundations, and part of the building fell down in 1748. Its ruins are shown in an engraving of 1773 standing
at the extreme edge of the cliff. (1)
