1823-1828. Architects - Amon Wilds and Charles Augustus Busby.
Four storeys (with a fifth added in some cases) and basement with
area. Three windows each. Stuccoed (three houses cement - fronted)
with rusticaton on ground floor. The terrace is designed as a
unit. Central house (No7) juts out and has massive Corinthian
columns supporting a balustraded balcony on third floor. The
end houses (Nos1 and 13) also project slightly and have Corinthian
columns, but these support the cornice instead of the balcony. Nos
5 and 9 are similar except that the 2 outer columns of 4 are
replaced by pilasters. Nos 6 and 8 are similar to Nos 5 and 9, but
not projecting. All the other houses have 1st floor balconies
(Nos 4 and 9 with hoods). Most houses have porches with Doric
columns. Rectangular fanlights. Glazing bars missing except in
basement. Some of the houses have been defaced by the addition of
balconies on 2nd floor or by cutting away the cornice. Harrison
Ainsworth lived at No 5 from 1853-1867, as a tablet on the house
records. Photographs in the N.M.R. (1)
