Summary : Roman corridor villa found in Titsey Park in 1847 and excavated 1864-93. It was found to contain tessellated floors. The site may have also been used as a possible fulling mill, possible fishponds were also located. Earlier occupation was also recorded and included finds of a hourglass perforated macehead, a Neolithic polished flint axe, Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery. The finds are in the Titsey Collection, Guildford Museum.
More information : [TQ 4048 5457] Roman Villa [G.S.] (remains of) (1)

Tripartite corridor villa 125 x 60 ft., later converted for fulling, found 1847, excavated 1864 - 1893. Patches of tessellated pavement, Samian, Castor and coarse pottery, glass iron and bronze objects, coins etc. found. Indications of destruction by fire. Possible enclosure wall running for about 80 ft. Possible enclosure wall running for about 80 ft. to the South. Levelling the bays of two adjacent "fishponds" in 1865-6 revealed Roman remains in their construction which suggests that they were contemporary and possibly used in fulling operations? A suggestion was made of the possibility of a second building nearby but the evidence would seem to be the boundary wall and the remains in the fish ponds (2-3). Evidence of pre-Roman occupation was found in the form of numerous flint flakes, worked bones, potsherds ("probably British") and a B.A. beaker certainy found on the villa site (4). A polished flint axe (2) was found in grubbing out an old bank or hedge and a perforated sandstone hammer (2) was found on, or close by, the villa site. Finds are in the Titsey Collection, Guildford Museum (4), while a cast of the stone hammer is in the B.M. (Acc. No. CC St. 157a) (5). Scheduled (6). Plan: See AO/63/103/5. (2-7)

"Foundations of one room with parts of others adjoining still exposed but in poor condition. Elsewhere the site is overgrown and tree covered. There are scatters of shaped stones, tile and flint."
Surveyed at 25" scale. (8)
